FEB: The awesome 5 wildlife challenge

It’s time for the February Awesomest Adventure Challenge!

This month it’s the Awesome 5 Wildlife Challenge so it’s time to get out there and see how many of our ‘Awesome 5’ animals you can spot: Kangaroos and koalas usually aren’t too difficult. Emus are a little trickier. And you’ll need to be at least a little bit clever and lucky if you’re going to spot wombats and echidnas. But that’s why it’s a challenge!

The goal is to spot them out in the wild, but wildlife parks still count, because discovering our wildlife parks is also an awesome thing to do. There’s Cleland Wildlife Park, Gorge Wildlife Park, Urimbirra Wildlife Park, Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary, Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park and of course… the Adelaide Zoo!

Spot at least one of them (or more if you’re extra awesome), take a pic, post it to Facebook or Insta and tag us and use the #AwesomestAdventureChallenge hashtag, or if that’s not your jam just send it to us via socials, and you could win this month’s prize which is a Family Pass to Cleland Wildlife Park!

You have til the end of the month to complete the challenge. See how many you can spot. It’s up to you. Just get out there, discover our National Parks, and be awesome!

USEFUL INFO.

OK, so we’ve already told you wildlife parks are OK, but if you want to go extra awesome and spot these out in the wild, we’re going to give you a few of our best tips on where to spot some of these critters if you live in the metro area.

Kangaroos: early morning grazing on the grass at Belair National Park is a good one. Likewise at the top end of Anstey Hill Recreation Park. Head out of town and these days you’re a good chance to spot them just about anywhere.

Koalas: Our go to spot for koalas is Morialta Conservation Park, and you don’t even have to do one of the more strenuous hikes – although you totally should because they’re awesome. But even on the road into the park before you get to the last car park or along the main track to First Falls. Almost guaranteed. (We said ‘almost’.)

Emus: OK, slightly higher degree of difficulty but we’d say Belair National Park up near the volunteer centre or Para Wirra National Park… randomly just about anywhere, even walking along the main road in there.

Wombats: Rightio, things are starting to get serious now, and you’re almost certainly not gonna see one anywhere near Adelaide, but you’re a good chance to spot one up near Blanchetown. Hot tip: quite a few burrows in Brookfield Conservation Park so cross your fingers and you just never know. There’s also a ‘Wombat Walk’ in the South East in Penambol Conservation Park. And OK, sure, it’s a long way to go to maybe see a wombat, but there’s plenty of other cool things to do out that way so still worth the drive.

Echidnas: If Echidnas were a dive at the Olympics they’d be a 9.2 degree of difficulty because they can be elusive little buggers. And if they’re not moving and more than about 6 feet away, you’d probably never even know they were there! We don’t really have a hot tip, but we can tell you the last few places we saw them: Morialta, Red Banks out near Burra, The Riverland near Blanchetown and Black Hill Conservation Park on the edge of the ‘burbs.

Good luck!

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

Gotta confess, we’re not big on rules. The most important thing here really is to get you thinking about all the awesome things you can see and do in South Australia. With this challenge specifically, you can spot the animal in the wild or in a wildlife park, we’re fine with either. And you can spot one or more, also fine. You can post them to your socials and tag us, or send them to us. Fine again. Or you can not post or send at all, just do the challenge and enjoy yourself and that’s awesome. (But if we don’t see your pic or post you won’t be in the running to win.)

It’s worth noting, this is not an art or photography competition, so we don’t really care how good your pics are. We just care that you got out there and had an awesome time. So even if you took the pic on your iPhone 3 and can barely tell what it is, we’re good with that. Actually, even if you DON’T get a pic but take the time to message us with where you went and what you saw, you’re in!

WHAT’s the prize?

This month’s prize is a Family Pass to Cleland Wildlife Park. We randomly pick a winner and send you the prize.

(We’re not giving away a house or a million dollars so there aren’t really any other terms and conditions. You can be a resident of anywhere on Earth – although the prize won’t be much use to you if you’re not in SA. Any age. Any gender. Work anywhere you like. Be a friend or family member of someone who works anywhere they like. Enter by posting and tagging or sending us a pic of you doing the challenge, we pick someone, and if that someone is you, you get the prize, plain and simple.)
